February 2007 Columns

February 7, 2007

Five o’clock.
Betty Kelso rolls up the American flag
and carries it inside her sister’s shop,
Remona’s Art Gallery
.
Then she rolls Remona out to the car.
Every day.
Every day at 5:00 p.m. this occurs
after Betty finishes up her own full-
time job at Mason National Bank.
Then she heads across the square to
Remona’s
(on the west side).
Remona paints.
And always seems to smile.
No matter what.
Maybe because she paints the
prettiest Hill Country scenes you ever
did see.
They’ll make anyone smile.
Or maybe she’s one of those people
whose very heart is full of smiles.
Speaking of smiles, Jennifer Hitzfelder
is happy to have survived the move.

Her shop, Lilacs N’ Calico, radiates
from its new location further up the
square on the north side.
It’s near the corner between me and
Sam’s Antiques
.
Just looking in her window makes you
smile.
If you bet on the Indiana Colts then
Sunday’s Super Bowl made you
smile.
And Sunday’s weather had to make
even the crankiest person smile.
Sunshine.
Finally.
And temperatures above freezing.
With no arctic wind.
What a break.
What a treat.
The promise of Bluebonnets has been
sighted all over the county.
So have the Indian Blankets (aka
Firewheel or Gaillardia pulchella).

Rain has seen to that.
We might just have a flower-filled
Spring this year.
What a treat that will be.
Especially after the 2006 drouth.
And the Yankee weather this winter.
Brrrrr.
But we ain’t there yet.
Spring’s not official till March 21st.
Still, February is special in its own
right.
It’s the one month that isn’t
pronounced the way it’s spelled.
It has fewer days (which changes
every four years).
And February honors groundhogs,
sweethearts, American presidents,
the Chinese, and Christianity.
Now that’s sumthin’ special.
That’s Mason.
